POSITION SUMMARY
The African Languages
Initiative Program (AFLI) Resident Director serves as the American
Councils representative and in-country Program Director for
participants on the African Languages Initiative Program, an intensive
Swahili language training program at MS-TCDC in Arusha, Tanzania. The
AFLI Resident Director represents American Councils in his/her actions
and words during the tenure of appointment. S/he must be available to
program participants on a daily basis; observe student classes and
meet regularly with teachers, administrators, and students; and
arrange group travel and cultural programs. The AFLI Resident Director
must be available to participants during any emergencies that arise
and must communicate regularly with the African Languages Initiative
program staff in Washington, DC. The AFLI Resident Director is
responsible for managing the program’s in-country finances and
submitting a monthly expense report to American Councils. The AFLI
Resident Director will travel to Tanzania in advance of the program
participants’ arrival to ensure all arrangements are in place to begin
the program in mid-August.
Prior to the beginning of the program,
all Resident Directors are required to attend training in Washington,
D.C. The Resident Director will stay for the semester-long program and
return to the US with the group at the end of the program in November.
The AFLI Resident Director reports to the AFLI Senior Program Manager at American Councils.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
•
Serve as the local liaison between American Councils and the host
institute administration as directed to ensure that the academic
program proceeds as agreed;
• Serve as academic and personal
advisor for American Councils program participants;
•
Communicate regularly with the American Councils Washington office
reporting any problems regarding participants’ health, academic
performance, or behavior, and providing general group/program
updates;
• Coordinate closely with host institution staff to
arrange travel, and classroom audits for students;
• Monitor
participants’ health, safety, academic performance, and promptly
communicate significant issues to American Councils’ and host
institution staff;
• Coordinate health care for participants
and intervene on behalf of participants as necessary;
• Enforce
policies regarding terms and conditions of program
participation;
• Coordinate program logistics, including
cultural excursions and related travel, and communicate logistical
details to DC-based staff;
• Submit weekly written updates to
the DC office;
• Work with the host institution to build and
maintain a network of host families and to place incoming participants
within them;
• Work with the host institution to coordinate
peer tutors/conversation partners;
• Submit a final report,
program grades, and test scores within two weeks of program
conclusion;
• Manage program finances and submit monthly
expense reports accounting for all program expenditures;

• Demonstrated Advanced level or higher
oral proficiency in Swahili;
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in
relevant language or area studies or equivalent;
• Study,
work, or extensive travel experience in Tanzania;
• Experience
overseeing and guiding groups;
• Demonstrated skills in
academic and personal counseling;
• Demonstrated skills in
general financial accountability.
