Job Description

The Research Associate – Markets and Seed Systems will contribute towards facilitating the scaling out of quality seed of improved varieties and linking to output market in the commodity corridor, developing tools and methodologies for value chain analyses and development, supporting scaling of multi-stakeholder platforms (MSP), conducting consumer preference studies and other related market research work necessary to develop the commodity chains.

Key duties & responsibilities

Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of the bean market value chain data and document the impact of market interventions on the smallholder farmers.Strengthen the capacity of the national research partners, private sector and non-private sector in value chain research, market linkages and other facilitation skillsDesign and support the implementation of market value chain research in Africa including beans and associated value chains.Prepare investment plans for private and public sector investments in bean value chains including seed supply.Facilitate the establishment, support, monitor and strengthen the multi-stakeholder platforms (MSP) in different countries.Participate in the development and testing of sustainable market linkages and  business models that enhance market access of smallholder farmers  in collaboration with market value chain actors and other stakeholdersDesign and develop marketing and promotional strategies including working with health and nutritional centers to promote bio-fortified beans and materials for products promoted in different countries in collaboration with national partners.Participate in periodic project planning activities and reportingRequirementsA Master’s degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Economics and Management or related fieldsAt least two (2) years of experience research and facilitating marketing activities with partners.Experience in market surveys of different actors along the value chainExperience in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis using statistical and Econometric models and other software (Stata, SPSS, Ms Access, Excel etc)Ability to write proposal for Pan African Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) resource mobilization.Ability to prepare research and project reports and manuals and other dissemination materials such as blogs, newsletters, communication reports.Ability to facilitate and document learning processes with multiple stakeholders.A good understanding of the problem of market access in Africa.Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties.Excellent leadership, training and facilitation skills.Excellent interpersonal skills with advanced written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili.Strong ability to co-ordinate, prioritize and organize workload; take initiative and work under pressure. Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.Commitment to The Alliance of the Bioversity International and CIAT’s mission and core values.

Terms of employment

This position is a nationally recruited position based in Arusha, Tanzania. The initial contract will be for one (1) year subject to a probation period of three (3) months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.

This position is graded at BG06 level, with a minimum basic salary of TSZ 2,608,534 in a scale of BG01 to BG14 (BG14 being the highest level according to the Alliance job classification framework policy). The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) is looking for a qualified Senior Research Assistant to support active projects related to the use modern breeding technologies to assist in bean varieties improvement. The use of genomic selection in plant science has been well established. Specifically, advanced breeding techniques for selection of desirable plant traits for advancement. The Alliance is working to establish breeding program to enhance breeding activities that will enable development of new bean varieties that are more resilient, productive, and nutritious. The Senior Research Assistant   will provide advance breeding techniques to promote the breeding research activities.

Key duties & Responsibilities

Support identification of traits in beans verities that are desirable for advancement, such as disease resistance, increased yield, or improved growth rates.Participate in testing new bean varieties in different growing conditions to determine how well they perform in nature.Assist in monitoring and identifying bean diseases and creating strategies to prevent them from spreading to other plants.Supporting development of new strains of bean that meet specific criteria, such as increased productivity or improved taste, color and cooking time.Participating in selection of the best bean verities to breed based on desired traits and characteristics.Participate in development of breeding strategies to produce bean varieties with the desired characteristics, including selecting parents with desired traits that can be passed on to offspring.Ensure timely availability of germplasm inventory reports.Conduct and collect necessary data for advanced breeding lines in both greenhouses and in the field locations.Maintain bean germplasm in the cold room.Good report and journal writing skill is required.Analyze the data and report to supervisor on time.Supervise daily casual laborers and other subordinate staff.Carry out any other duties as maybe required.RequirementsBachelors degree in agronomy, plant sciences, crop production, plant breeding or other related areas of study.Masters is an added advantage.At least one year experience in breeding activities especially in beans and other related crops will be an added advantage.Current knowledge of plant biology, genetics, and breedingGood knowledge of trial design, data management, data analysis and statisticsBasic knowledge of plant pathology and of plant health related to identifying abnormal plant behavior due to biotic and abiotic stresses.Experience in data collection and entry, data management, quality assurance, and timely reporting.High attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.Excellent communication skills in English and KiswahiliComputer proficiency including MS Office (Word/ PowerPoint, advanced Excel skills, and SPSS)Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties.Excellent interpersonal with advanced written and verbal communication skills in English language.Strong ability to co-ordinate, prioritize and organize workload; take initiative and work under pressure.Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.Ability to maintain the highest level of integrity and standards of ethics, confidentiality, and professionalism.Professional integrity and a high performing team player who can work autonomously, remains accountable and contributes to a positive and cohesive team environment.Commitment to Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s mission and core values.

The use of genomic selection in plant science has been well established. Specifically, segregation and selection of desirable plant traits for advancement. The Alliance is working to establish an active molecular biology laboratory to assist in creation of new bean varieties that are more resilient, productive, and nutritious. The laboratory technician will provide specialized laboratory and greenhouse research assistance to promote the breeding research activities. The incumbent will be required to proficiently handle standard laboratory and greenhouse procedures and maintain a safe work environment.

Key duties & Responsibilities

Receive, label, and analyze samples (plants, seeds, and plant tissues etc.)Assist in processing samples for laboratory tests/procedures according to standard operating procedures, checks for proper samples identification.Perform special processing procedure to specimens including DNA extractions.Support in recording all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility.Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids, and compressed gases according to safety instructions.Assist in preparing solutions, reagents, equipment, apparatus, accessories and other supplies needed at the laboratory.Monitor reagents for expiration dates, preparation dates, inventory, and prepare as needed.Clean, sterilize, calibrate, and maintain equipment and apparatus used in all tests and analysis.Perform quality control and quality assurance tests and maintain quality control procedures in the laboratory.Ensure that all safety guidelines are always followed strictly and maintain a clean and orderly environment.Support in providing laboratory training to other personnel on proper laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.Participate in Field breeding activities.Perform any other related duties as required.RequirementsBachelors degree in laboratory technology, biology, chemistry, biotechnology, or relevant fields.Ongoing master’s is an added advantage.Proven experience working as a molecular laboratory technician or relevant position will be an added advantage.Experience in applying modern laboratory procedures, methods and computer linked equipment.Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards etc.)In depth knowledge of preventative measures and laboratory best practices.Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel) and database systems.High attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.Good report and journal writing skill is required.Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties.Excellent interpersonal with advanced written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili language.Strong ability to co-ordinate, prioritize and organize workload; take initiative and work under pressure.Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.Ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure and meeting deadlines.Ability to maintain the highest level of integrity and standards of ethics, confidentiality, and professionalism.Professional integrity and a high performing team player who can work autonomously, remains accountable and contributes to a positive and cohesive team environment.Commitment to Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s mission and core values.
